Dr. Lewis is a native of Memphis, Tennessee, and was born at the Baptist Memorial Hospital. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude from Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, and earned his M.D. degree from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. He did his internship and first year residency at Vanderbilt University Hospital and completed his residency and GI training at Cornell Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Lewis spent two years in the U.S. Public Health Service in Louisville, Kentucky, prior to returning to Memphis and joining Dr. Wruble to form the Memphis Gastroenterology Group, P.C. He is a former member of the Board of Trustees of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and was also President of the American College of Gastroenterology. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Memphis, The Health Science Center and Co-Director of the Gastrointestinal Laboratory at Baptist Memorial Hospital. Dr. Lewis was Chief of Staff at Baptist Memorial Hospital in 1985 and continues to be active on committees, both the national level of the American College of Gastroenterology and locally at the Baptist Memorial Hospital. He became a Master of the American College of Gastroenterology in October of 1992. He is one of the first twelve physicians nationally to receive this honor. He has been named as one of "The Best Doctors in America" since 1994 as voted on by his peers. This was recently recognized by Memphis Magazine.

Dr. Lewis and his wife, Gail, have three daughters: Robin, Tracey and Joelle, and three grandchildren.
